Winter Decorations

Winter DecorationsDays are getting shorter and temperatures are falling. It can only mean that winter is right around the corner. This year, embrace the cold, frost and snow with a collection of winter decorations sure to make you long for fires and hot chocolate.

If you haven’t transformed your home for the winter season before, or even if you have, new ideas and products emerge every year. This year go beyond your standard doormat and centerpiece to find winter decorations that add flair and warmth to your home.

Winter Decorations Outdoors
Winter is best seen out-of-doors with falling snowflakes and white landscapes. Add a few snowflakes of your own in the form of hardy mobiles or prisms. Gazing balls in the garden can be accompanied by a few glistening snowflakes hung from the trees. Twinkle lights are by no means reserved only for Christmas, so go ahead and hang some early in your garden to transform it into a winter wonderland.

On the porch or patio, a welcome mat with a few snowmen or other winter decoration can set the theme, but other decorations might include wooden reindeer and potted poinsettias. Evergreens aren’t just for Christmas trees, so a bit of mistletoe or holly can be cheerful growing in the yard, in a pot or included in a wreath hung on the door.

Winter Decorations Inside
Inside the home, winter decorations celebrate the season and offer warmth to visitors arriving through the cold. The first thing visitors should enjoy in your home is a scented candle or potpourri. Winter should include evergreen, spicy and baking scents. You can even create your own potpourri by using spices plentiful this time of year including nutmeg and orange essence.

Small touches throughout the rooms can bring seasonal warmth as well. Doorstops with snowflake or holiday patterns help keep out drafts but make the room appear cozy as well. Snowmen adorn teapots and mugs, and throws decorate the backs of sofas and invite cuddling in front of the fireplace or a relaxing book.

Speaking of the fireplace, nothing says winter like a snapping fire, so be sure you use yours as often as possible. Even if you are unable to light a fire, place a collection of candles in the fireplace to help give the room a bit of flame and cheer. A decorative guard in front of the fireplace can offer extra protection and style along with fireplace utensils. Be sure to find holiday centerpieces such as bowls, platters and figurines for tables in all rooms of the house.

Accessories such as snowman figurines and snowflake coasters are small touches, but help bring the entire design together. Include every detail to make the transformation complete. Then, when your light and airy summer home has been transformed to a snug and cozy winter cabin, make yourself a cup of tea, or better yet- hot chocolate, in your favorite winter mug, pull up one of those comfortable throws and enjoy the glow of the fire as you watch the first snow of the season fall past your windows.
