Windsocks

WindsocksWindsocks were born from the art of kite-making, and served many of the same purposes, while remaining stable and anchored so there was no need for a human to stand there with a string in their hand.

There is evidence of kite use that goes back more than 2,000 years in Asia, where an Emperor once flew a kite over his enemy’s palace, not only to determine the direction of the wind, but to measure the distance his soldiers would have to tunnel to get underneath the palace!

Eventually, kites and especially windsocks, grew to be good luck symbols, particularly in Japan. This may explain why one of the most popular of all windsock designs is the koi or goldfish, with it’s glistening body, and elegant, floating fins.

Windsocks

Like many other things, windsocks were carried to the Western world once trade routes were established. But even prior to that, the Romans had designed a type of windsock for indicating the direction of the wind before they went into battle, or burned a town.

As time passed and the world became more civilized, windsocks continued to serve useful purposes as wind indicators at factories concerned with their smokestack emissions, airports where the direction could be a crucial factor to landing, and as a meteorological tool for carrying out weather experiments.

Today, you can get windsocks in literally hundreds of whimsical and colorful designs to brighten up your yard no matter what the season. To get the most out of a windsock, it needs to be mounted on a tall pole, in an area where it can catch the full power of a breeze. Try not to place your pole too close to trees or bushes where trailing pieces can get caught and knotted. Full sun is not a problem with modern UVC resistant polyesters that go into a durable windsock’s construction.

Most people prefer to fly a windsock as high as possible, and opt for the 10’ poles. But you can get poles that will telescope from 4-8’ so that you can adjust it to your preference. There are also brackets for mounting these adjustable poles on fences and patios, allowing you to enjoy smaller windsocks, close-up.

If you’re planning on a grouping, or several poles placed in a line or along a path, you might like the brilliantly colored koi or goldfish, with their long, graceful fins twirling in the lightest breeze. For a very individual windsock, to be placed as an eye-catcher for visitors or passers-by, try something truly moo-ving like the Holstein cow. While some windsocks are tubular in shape with streamers flying from the back end, the new animal shapes are the animal as you’d see it on the ground. Now, pigs really can fly, if you get a porcine windsock!

Windsocks are one of the newest and most popular additions to lawn sculpture and garden décor. They’re inexpensive, simple to install, and provide dashes of color where your yard or garden most needs them.
