 | Winter has set in and your landscape looks bleak. Instead of letting it add to the winter blahs, brighten it with color and beauty. There are hundreds of ways to make your landscape set out during the winter months.
- Plant winterberry, holly, laurel, mistletoe, boxwood and juniper. Each has berries that will attract birds to your yard where they will provide splashes of color and nature’s music to their surroundings.
- Plant evergreens in your yard and then use the boughs to decorate porch posts and railings. Add a red ribbon of some bows for an elegant look.
- Decorate trees and shrubs with clear mini lights. These can be used to bring brightness to your yard all year round. In winter, light brings a sense of magic to the landscape when they reflect off freshly fallen snow. It also adds peace and serenity to the atmosphere.
- Build a snow family or snow sculptures. Use your imagination and creativity. Create snow people, deer and other creatures to inhabit your yard. Igloos can be created with ease by packing snow into plastic crates to make snow blocks.
- Erect flag holders and add a variety of garden flags to your yard. There is a wide variety to choose from. Cardinals, bluejays and chickadees are popular flags during the winter months. Choose from flowers, deer, raccoons, fox and various others. These not only brighten your landscape but allow you to decorate using your own personal preferences.
- Paint or stain your fence or deck a bright color such as Barn or Colonial Red or Forest or Emerald Green.
- An alternative to painting your fence one color is to choose a neutral blue for the background and use stencils to add creeping ivy, trees, birds, squirrels, raccoons and other small animals. Larger stencils are also available, or hire an artist to paint a mural, such as deer at a pond or wolves in a forest.
- Resin lawn ornaments are made to withstand all types of weather conditions. Create a small ice rink and place resin fairies around it. Add a few clear mini lights and you have created a fairy skating rink.
- Create and icy pond in a plastic bird bath. Place several resin birds on the ice to create a feathered friends skating party theme. Highlight it with flood lights to add a whimsical touch to your yard.
- Hang wind chimes to bring music into your yard. Wind chimes are made from a variety of materials that will withstand winter conditions. You can use stainless steel flatware and tin cups to create a wind chime of your own. Spray it occasionally with a bit of oil to keep it from rusting, or paint it with rustproof paint.
- Hang colorful windsocks to porch posts and fences to bring color and movement into the landscape. These come in a wide range of colors and styles.
- Place different styles of birdhouses around your yard. Gazebos and lighthouses are popular, as are a range of other types. Put different birdseed in each house to attract a variety of winter birds to your winter garden.
The only limitation you have is your imagination. Let your creativity flow to bring beauty and color to your yard and garden this winter.
