In replicating the sounds of nature, table top fountains provide the additional benefit of masking other, unwanted noises such as a television in the next room, the hum of a computer, or repetitive noises from outside the home. They’re also useful for restoring moisture in the air of your home, something that is at a premium during months when forced air or other systems tend to dry it out.
Depending on the room, or the location where you would like to have one, you can opt for table top fountains, wall fountains and floor fountains. To create a striking first impression as visitors enter your home, you might place a floor fountain in the reception area or foyer. These are particularly effective with vaulted or multi-storied areas, where the sound can rise to all levels, and surround your visitors with the gentle fall of water.
Styles vary from pedestal fountains reminiscent of ancient Rome, to more exotic and unique fountains lined with a pattern of mosaic tiles. Floor fountains are also a good choice as focal points for rooms where you have gathered plants together, adding to the ambience of nature.
Wall fountains are a truly unique and exciting addition to interior décor. They can be built-in, or simply mounted on a wall where you have centered potted plants and an artificial rock garden. Create an entire room based on nature, by using wood furniture, earth tones in carpeting and curtains, and a wall fountain made of imitation stone.
If you find that your room dimensions are too small for effective arrangement of the furnishings, and you still want to add the serenity of falling water, then a table top fountain is your best bet. They are perfect for any room in the house as a stand alone decoration, or in concert with natural stone figurines to suit a theme. Surround your table top fountain with scented candles for romance, or just your own relaxation. Place one on a low table in front of the fireplace, and turn off the lights. The delights of a table top fountain are many, and you’re sure to come up with your own ideas for making them part of your home.
How to Make a Fountain
Imagine sitting back after a hard day, putting your feet up, closing your eyes and letting the trickle of a tabletop fountain wash all of your cares away. The sound of water is balm for the soul. It soothes our spirit and calms our psyche. With just a little work, you can make a tabletop fountain for every room in your house. It’s easy and all you need are a few basic supplies.
Supplies
- A shallow ceramic or pottery bowl – approximately 3 to 4 inches in height.
- A small fountain pump – 45 to 60 gph
- One piece of slate that will sit in the center of the bowl.
- Rocks of various sizes.
- An air plant, vine, a piece of driftwood or decoration of your choice.
Method
- Place the pump in the center of the bowl that you’ve chosen.
- Drill a hole in the center of the slate slab 5/8 inch O.D. This size hole will give the fountain a slow, bubbling effect. If you want a faster flow, drill a larger hole.
- Lay the slab of slate over the pump.
- Place smooth, rounded rocks and pebbles around the slab of slate in a decorative design so the pump cannot be seen.
- Add smaller rocks for added effect, or stack slate pieces one on top of the other.
- Place an air plant, vine, a piece of driftwood and decorations of your choice. Add a few small air plants and a fairy or two, or a couple of elves. This will give your fountain an enchanting, magical look. Another idea is miniature resin animals such as squirrels, rabbits and raccoons.
- Fill the fountain with water when you have it set up to your satisfaction, plug it in and enjoy the soothing sound of water in your home.
