Southwestern Christmas DecorationsAs an alternative garland, several feet of brown leather could be wrapped around the tree. Or use lengths of leather as hoops for hanging ornaments and wreaths. Instead of ribbon, tie leather strips around presents instead of satin or plastic ribbon. Wrap presents in brown paper or in paper printed with Western themes, or with “flexible” images, such as stars. Although stars are not automatically something one might think of for a cowboy-themed Christmas, they do conjure up images of the cowboys of the Old West falling asleep under the stars, much like the shepherds who hastened to Jesus’s birth. Depending on the material, star ornaments may also be reminiscent of deputy’s badges. Use children’s dramatic play items, such as "deputy" badges, for tree ornaments or package decorations. Hustle on over to your nearest Western clothing store and hobby or craft store to pick up some regular and miniature cowboy hats to use as holiday centerpieces and Christmas tree ornaments, respectively. Although boot-themed candles, etc., can be found for your Western Christmas celebration, other, ahem…boot-y…. can be found to help add a cowboy Christmas to the rest of your home. Boots that have a container placed in them can hold umbrellas, or with a vase inserted inside, they make quirky containers for cut flowers. Sup’s Up! Triangles (musical instrument) make attractive Christmas tree ornaments. Old-fashioned Western prints or cowboy-themed postcards mounted on pieces of leather or wood to make them more stable have a great impact as Christmas tree ornaments, and will last through several Christmas celebrations. Create punched "tin" ornaments for your tree and wall, respectively, with small and large pie plates. Tape your design to the inside of the "bowl" of the dish, then use a hammer in one hand to gently tap the head of a nail as you hold the nail in place with the other. (You can also find a “pardner” to help.) Go along the lines of the item you are tracing, and when you remove it, you will have your dotted design left behind in the pie plate. The flames of candles are reminiscent of a cowhand’s campfire, and a room lit solely by candles will inspire quiet tasks and reflection. With a little ingenuity, and a whole lot of rope, you will have your home on the range in no time. | ||||||||
