 | When it first appeared on the market, solar outdoor lighting was relatively expensive, and only available in a few basic styles, most of them lights on stakes that you set in the ground. But today, the energy conservation movement and the drop in prices has made these type of outdoor decor accessories highly popular, and now they come in almost every conceivable shape and size, for uses you might not even have dreamed of.
The most common use is the original – lamps that light up a path, driveway, stairs or pool, and come on stakes. But even these have moved beyond the simple glass lantern on a metal stake. Now you can get elegant carriage lamp styles in copper and other metals, on stakes embellished with scrolls and curls. They’re as visible or unnoticeable as you want. The ease with which they go into the ground means they are also easy to take up in winter for storage and for moving around should you change your mind about where they look best. If you want something less intrusive than stakes lining the path, you might look into low profile lights, which are long, slender cylinders that can be set right into the border of the walkway.

Solar Outdoor Lighting
Solar outdoor lighting has also become a way to enjoy your gardens, even after dark. The right lights placed in strategic places, can highlight a prized rosebush, birdbath or fountain. There are also solar powered lights that can be placed underwater in the fountain or a pond, and create a soft glow diffused by the water after dark. Some of the fountains have the solar light embedded right in the basin, making a great way to create an evening focal point by putting a ring of faux rocks with solar lights in them around the base to create an even more spectacular display.
Gardens are also a favorite place for solar powered statuary. From cherubs with gazing balls to wizards with “crystal” balls, the light they cast at night will reach out to the flowers and plants nearest them, creating a pool of light that fades gently into the darkness, the further away you look. To expand an outstanding nighttime tableau like this, try using solar spotlights in selected spots, or “plant” some of the solar powered flowers amongst your real ones.
There’s room between the walk and the garden and the pool for even more lights! The new multi-light strings are a fabulous way to create a fairy wonderland out of decorative bushes. You can also get light covers, much like the ones available for mini lights on Christmas trees. Dragonflies, hummingbirds and other creatures will glow amongst the branches from dusk till dawn, charged by a power cell at one end of the cord. Be sure when using these lights though, to make sure that your power cell, often concealed in a faux rock, is set out where it gets direct sunlight.
Not only does solar power provide you with convenient and inexpensive lighting, it can secure your home, with motion detectors. Although hopefully it won’t detect any movement in the pool after bedtime, when the red eyes of a solar powered alligator are bobbing silently on the water! |
