 | You know how they say the best things in life are free? Well, sometimes the best gifts are as well. And if not totally “free”, they cost next to nothing, but become treasures that no amount of money can buy. When you have a family and a tight budget, or just children who are determined to give Mom something special for her special day, you might find yourself looking for gift ideas that are inexpensive and allow the kids some latitude in choice for all ages and “skills”.
There’s always the traditional breakfast in bed, hopefully prepared under the supervision of someone who can work the toaster. That doesn’t mean Dad has to interfere, just be there to organize the brigade that storms the bedroom of an unsuspecting mother. The simpler the meal, the easier it is for young children to prepare. Let someone responsible make the coffee, and put it on the furthest side of the tray from any youngsters lucky enough to be designated the waiter du jour.

Mother's Day Gifts
If you have a baby in the family, or a neighbor or friend that has one, ask for some of their baby food bottles, either the small ones or junior foods. These make excellent “snow globes”. All you need is a few small silk flowers, or a tiny china figurine to glue to the bottom. Have an older child, Dad or grandparent, glue the figure in with a glue gun or Crazy Glue. When using Crazy Glue around children, always have some solvent handy, because often their hands end up where you least expect them. A package of fine metallic glitter from the craft store is all you need to purchase. Every child can make their own, so Mom has a whole set. Just put in a small amount of the glitter, fill to just below the rim with water, and screw on the top. You may choose to glue them shut as well. Before closing, cut circles of colorful material that are 2” wider than the diameter of the top. When the jar lid is on, place the circle over the top, smooth it down the sides and tie a piece of colored ribbon or wool around the neck under the lip of the lid. You have an instant globe, created in minutes, for next to nothing.
Hand Mom her whole family on a plate…literally. Take a spare plate from the cupboard, or buy a plain white one at a Dollar store. Gold-rimmed or other narrow trim is fine, but you want to do the decorating yourself. First, you’ll need a family photo taken from a regular camera or digital camera picture that you can print off your computer. Size it so that it is slightly smaller than the center section of the plate. For example, if the middle is six inches in diameter, you’ll want to fit everyone into a space that is a four-inch circle. Cut a six-inch circle of green material or felt. Now cut out the center of the circle so there is a 4-inch diameter opening. Trim your photo so that it can be glued in the center of the plate, and not show past the edges of the green circle. Attach the photo with craft glue, then place the green “frame” over it. Take a piece of brightly colored cloth or pink felt, and cut narrow, ¼” strips that will reach from the edge of the green circle to the edge of the plate. Have the children space these evenly when gluing them on, to make divisions for “petals”. Lastly, borrow some of Mom’s nail polish (and keep the remover handy), and brush a little at the end of each petal, about a 1” strip, from the edge, in.
Gifts from the hearts and hands of little ones, are truly priceless. |
