Miniature ShoesHowever, fashion did grow in leaps and bounds. “Otzi”, more familiarly known as the “Iceman”, was found perfectly preserved, as were his sandals made of bear rawhide soles, and woven plant fibre uppers, with a covering of deerhide. He would have made them around 3300B.C. Sandals were the footwear of rich and poor, right up until about the time of Saxon England, when someone figured out how to make “turned shoes: footwear that had an upper sewn to a lower piece, while turned inside out. By the 1300s, shoe fashion had already gone through pointed toes, wasp waists, and a change of stitching from leather to thread. After that, fashion went to the “clogs” if not the dogs. First came backless mule slipper/shoes. But wiser heads prevailed in Venice, where the streets were full of unmentionable garbage, and the platform overshoe was invented, to keep feet out of the muck. The soles were often two feet thick. Boots as we know them, became popular in the reign of Charles I. He had suffered rickets as child, and had to have footwear specially tailored to hide the brass supports in them. Not surprisingly, it’s the footwear of the 1800s, which started the collecting of miniature shoes. In the early part of the century, women’s shoes were low to the ground, but in the pre-Victoria years, they were encouraged to peep out from under skirts, and as such, were fashion statements of their own, made in satin, leather, velvet and brocade. They tended to a pointed toe, although not nearly so narrow as men’s shoes. While court shoes were a slip-on affair, the “half boot” that developed by the 1830s, was usually laced up the side, as were some styles of men’s boots. As the century wore on, shoes became rounder at the toe, rose higher on the ankle, and took on some tortuous shapes whose narrow ankles must have made them agony to wear. Men wore Wellington boots in imitation of England’s famous admiral, and equestrians also donned long leather boots for riding. But like earlier men’s shoes, and the cowboy boot that had evolved in America, they too had pointed toes. Because it had been discovered through trail and painful error, that riders could not get their feet out of the stirrups fast enough, when their horse stumbled. The 20th century ushered in an era of footwear that was mostly for looks. As hems rose, so did the height of a woman’s heels. Old styles became new again, as footwear cycled through pointed toes, platforms, clogs, Oxfords and boots. While genuine Victorian miniature shoes may be hard to come by, there are a number of manufacturers reproducing the same quality collectibles, in china and other materials. Some of the most popular miniature shoes, which make a great gift for birthdays and other occasions, are western shoes, Victorian button hook boots, and Cinderella’s glass slipper. | ||||||||
