Making Christmas Ornaments
The Christmas or holiday tree needs ornaments placed on it for decoration. From painted glass ornaments to dough ornaments, there are ornaments that anyone, including kids, can make.
Painted Glass Ornaments Unpainted glass ornaments can usually be found at any craft store. Special glass paints can also be found at most crafts stores. You may also find kits with unpainted glass ornaments and the paints used to paint the ornaments. You can also buy the colored and decorated glass ornaments and use glass paint to paint names and anything else on the ornaments. In a pinch, use acrylic paints. After the paint dries, then apply a coat of sealant to keep the paint from chipping. Wooden Ornaments The kids can make ornaments made from wood. You may choose to buy precut wooden shapes or you can make your own if you have the tools to cut out the shapes. You could even make ornaments from craft sticks, toothpicks and other pieces of scrap wood. You can leave the wooden pieces unpainted if you want or you may paint them. Start with a base coat. This can be white paint or a special base coat. Either one will work for the ornaments. Use acrylic paints for best results. Follow up the wooden ornaments with a finish such as a spray. This will help protect the ornament from wear and tear. Christmas Tree Chains Use toilet paper tubes to make a Christmas tree chain to wrap around the tree. Gather up toilet paper tubes. Cut the tubes into smaller sections about one inch wide to make your loops in the chain. Then, cut the strips on one side to open the loop. You can cut as many loops as you need to make the chain. Join the loops by chaining them together. To make sure the loops don't fall off, you can tape or glue the cut edges together once all loops have been chained together. Snowflakes Snowflakes can be made out of coffee filters and hung on the tree. Take a coffee filter and fold it in half several times. Cut out small pieces from it. Open it up and add a string and you have a quick easy Christmas tree ornament. Crafting the Holidays The holidays are an exciting time for the kids. Some kids are excited about Santa Claus bringing presents and gifts. Others may be excited about snowfall. Whatever the reason kids may be excited, some days may bring on boredom. Making some holiday tree ornaments may be enough to save your kids from the boredom. |
