Ladybug Items

	The Ladybug, or Ladybird Beetle, is one of the more desirable insects to have in your garden, because it is a natural predator of many pests, such as aphids, and can consume as many as 5,000 of them in their lifetime. Sporting a semi-circular shaped body that may lean slightly to an oval shape, the most common ladybug is a bright orange, and normally comes with black spots, although they have been seen with just the colored wing covers. A ladybug’s head is covered by a hood known as the pronotum. The Asian lady beetle or ladybug, the one we are familiar with, can be easily identified by the white pronotum with a black “M” on it. But if you’re lucky and live in the right area, you can also see ladybugs in white, pink, yellow, red or black, some of which are identified as separate species, by counting the number of spots on their wings.

This handy little gardener’s helper is a go-getter from the start. Females lay eggs in places where there is “food”, which can be the underside of a leaf that is harboring aphids. When hatched, the spiny larvae will consume the aphids in the surrounding area, until they reach the pupae stage, and develop into adult ladybugs.
