 | Mooooo-ve over cows and geese, the ladybug is here! Yes, barnyard buddies still have their niche when it comes to home decorating, but one of the more delightful themes to come along in recent years, is the "nature" look as seen in ladybug decor.
It’s a look that can work well in almost any room, although when you have a family to consider, you might want to understate the main areas of your home, like the living room, and exercise your artistry in places like the kitchen and bathroom.
Not everyone may enjoy these charming little insects, so it’s up to you to make them irresistible, by not overwhelming a room so that it seems like an infestation, instead of a decorating scheme.
In the bathroom, your theme can be carried out very simply with plain white walls to go with your fixtures, and then use your ladybug items for highlights. The vanity is the perfect place for a ladybug bathroom set that can include a soap dish, toothbrush holder, lotion dispenser, glass, and even a piggy bank. For the tub, a shower curtain dotted with tiny ladybugs, or a lush pattern of greenery with ladybugs peeping out from under the leaves. Finish off the room with mats and curtains that pick up the colors in your other ladybug items, using either a rich green, or even an orange, which kids really love. If you haven’t gone overboard on darker colors in the curtains and towels, you can also consider a wallpaper border with greenery and ladybugs.
The same decorating rules apply to the kitchen, where selective use of your favorite bustling beetle will be more attractive and welcome, than putting them on every surface possible.
If you have a small kitchen, pale shades or white walls work best to create an atmosphere of light. That includes keeping it light at the windows, and using either white blinds, or light colored curtains. They can be found in ladybug patterns, or you can purchase material to make your own, but consider what else you are using in the kitchen that has ladybugs on it, and decide whether the curtains would be overkill. If they are "too much", you might try a white ruffle curtain with either orange or green trim and tie-backs. Larger kitchens with lots of lighting and window, can afford to splurge with darker curtains, such as green, with patterned tie-backs.
If you sew and have found a ladybug material that really tickles your fancy, then you’re all set for making matching place mats, cushion covers, potholders, curtains, and an apron for the cook! If you can’t sew a stitch, don’t worry. Kitchen decor centers are full of
as many or as few cloth accessories as you want.
When it comes to dishes, less is sometimes better. Keep your tableware to its usual pattern, and make mealtimes or a visit with guests a special event, by serving tea or coffee in a ladybug pot with matching mugs. You can also get whistling teakettles with ladybugs scattered over the enamel coating.
By all means, carry your ladybug decor to the great outdoors! Plant ladybug garden flags in your flowerbeds, and add a ladybug welcome sign by the driveway. Do you have a clear space in your rock garden? Fill it with a decorative ladybug stepping stone. Then hang a lovely hand-painted wooden wreath on your door, and let your ladybug friends welcome whoever drops in.
Ladybug decor is a fun way to bring nature indoors!
