Key Hiders
Many people like the vinyl animals or gnomes for their garden décor. A lot of these decorative items are available as key hiders, but they have two disadvantages. One is that they wouldn’t normally be available when it snows, and secondly, some people don’t leave them out over winter, which could be a signal to potential burglars that this is their easy way in to your home.
The better choices are things that are even more common, but not as obviously decorative, or outstanding. Everyday items are excellent key hiders, and that includes wall thermometers. These would normally be in place year-round, and the sliding face moves up to reveal the key. Or you might choose an imitation rock with a built-in compartment. Just be sure to toss it somewhere that it doesn’t look obvious, but where you can still find it. If you want to switch your location from time to time, try a fake sprinkler for Spring through the Fall. Screw off the top, and there is your key. These are excellent for hiding amongst the shrubbery or flowers.
Remember that leaving a key out in your yard, makes it available to anyone who comes along, and is resourceful enough to check the more likely places for hiding them, such as under mats, and on top of door frames. Hide your keys in a place that is not handy to the door, and not so obvious that it will be the first thing a housebreaker heads for. |
