Hummingbird Figurines

HummingbirdsJeweled coryphée, with quivering wings like shielding gauze, outspread. – Edna Proctor Clarke

Hummingbirds are those delightful little busybodies that hover over your garden in summer, sip the nectar and dart off to the next flower. When first observed by Spanish explorers to South America, they were called “flying jewels”, a name that is still appropriate when you catch the flash of sunlight on the metallic green feathers, and ruby-red throat patch.

Hummingbird Figurines

Just as in other species of birds, there are actually banding programs to identify and track hummingbirds. While it seems incredible, there are some 160 specially licensed banders in the U.S. and Canada, who are permitted to catch, band, and release the hummingbird. Why is it so difficult? Well, size is the most crucial issue. The bands come on pre-printed, very thin sheets of aluminum, and must be handmade by the bander, to fit the species they are identifying. Each one weighs approximately 6.6 milligrams, and it would take 4,350 to make an ounce. But they are useful. Banding has shown that some hummingbirds have lived as long as 12 years in the wild, although the average is thought to be 3-5 years.

Hummingbirds are a wonderful addition to your yard and gardens, and can be easily attracted by planting the right flowers. They have virtually no sense of smell, and so are attracted mostly by high profile flowers or plantings, that they will follow, almost like a paper route. Once they become familiar with the location of your garden, they will return over and over, attracting others as they do so. The plants you use will depend on your location, and soil, but some of the more appealing ones for hummingbirds, are azalea, mimosa and weigela bushes, honeysuckle and morning glory vines, perennials (Bee balm, Columbine, Hosta, Yucca) and annuals (Impatiens, Petunias, Fuchsia, Salvia).

If you haven’t the room, or soil for a proper garden, and even if you do, adding hummingbird feeders around your yard and patio will provide hours of entertainment for the whole family. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to have red-colored glass to attract them. Nor should you add red dye to the sugar solution for your feeder, as it may contain chemicals that are poisonous. The formula is very simple: one part white cane sugar, to four parts water. You can boil it if you like, which helps dissolve the sugar, but it does not prevent fermentation in the feeder. That is caused by bacteria introduced on the hummingbird’s tongue. Your sugar water can be stored in the fridge up to two weeks.

Whatever size or model of feeder you choose, try not to hang it in direct sunlight, which will accelerate any deterioration in the sugar solution. Some people also suggest not hanging them near windows, to avoid collision and injury to your hummingbird visitors. But this can easily be avoided by taping silhouette cut-outs of predator birds on the glass, or attaching streamers/windsocks to the window frame outside. The most important thing to remember, is that the feeders must be cleaned regularly. Although it appears most birds will not drink from spoiled nectar, there is always the chance that some will. Be sure to check for black mold.

Of course, with hummingbird figurines, you can enjoy the enchantment year round. The delicate wings and beak, and brilliant colors, surrounded by hand-painted flowers, make a wonderful collectible, whether it is a clock, candleholder, collector’s plate or wind chimes. Porcelain, blown glass, and crystal hummingbird figurines are great gifts for the bird lover, too!
