How to Make a Gourd Birdhouse

The first step in making a gourd birdhouse is to obtain one of the large hard shell gourds, also known as Lagenaria, that grows in a variety of shapes and sizes, one of which will certainly be suitable for the species of bird you desire to attract. Gourds are easily cultivated in areas where squash and pumpkins can be grown, although in colder climates it is prudent to start the plants early indoors, preferably in peat pots. Or you can buy a gourd at a farmers market or roadside stand.

For woodpeckers and owls, choose a long, deep gourd with a large cavity. Medium sized gourds are suitable for blue birds and barn swallows. A small gourd, five inches in diameter or so, will make a home for a chickadee or wren.

First, drill a vertical hole straight through the top of the gourd. This is for the cord or wire you will use to hang the birdhouse. Next, choose a location for the entrance hole, making sure you have placed it high enough from the bottom of the gourd so that the bird can step down into the house. Using a drill bit or pocket knife, cut an entrance hole of the correct size. A small owl or a downy woodpecker will require a 1 and 1/2 inch inch hole. For blue birds, make the hole 1 and 1/4 inches in diameter. A martin house should have a 2 and 1/4 inch hole, and smaller birds, such as the wren and chickadee, require holes only 1 inch or so. You will also need to cut a hole directly below the entrance hole for a perch. Remove the seeds and membrane from the interior of the gourd. Sand the edges of the entrance hole smooth. Insert a short dowel for the perch and glue it into place. Drill several holes in the bottom of the gourd for drainage. If desire, apply two coats of varnish or shellac for a protective finish.

Fasten the house securely into a tree, away from prevailing winds. A gourd birdhouse will last for years and will be greatly appreciated by your feathered friends!
