Gifts for Gardeners

During the spring and early summer, gardening accessories are sold in nearly any discount department store as well as in the garden section of most home improvement stores. In many areas, there are also specialty garden supply stores. You can also usually find inexpensive gardening tools and decorations at a dollar store, or even at garage sales and flea markets. If you are shopping for gardening supplies off-season, your best bet is to shop online. Put together a gift basket including several of these items in a nice watering can!

Books (Prices Vary)

There are thousands of books on gardening, ranging from how-to books to those dealing with specialized situations such as small space or container gardening. Gardening books are available in any bookstore and can also be purchased online through sites such as Amazon or Barnes and Noble. You might also consider a subscription to a gardening magazine such as Better Homes and Gardens.

Tools of the Trade ($20 - $50)

For gardeners who are just starting out, think basic tools, including rakes, shovels, hoes, pitch forks, or a nice set of good hand tools. Another option would be a tool rack in which to store the larger tools, or even a tool rack on wheels. One real neat item is a kneeler bench, which serves as both a place to kneel and a little bench to sit.

This year’s “hot” gardening item is the Garden Claw. This handy device is similar to a tiller in that it cultivates and loosens the soil, thus aerating it. Once the soil is broken up, water can penetrate deeper and stays in the soil rather than on top of the ground. The Garden Claw can also be used to weed, fertilize and integrate compost into the soil, and along with the full-length model, there are also mini-Garden claws that can be used for small spaces.

Most gardeners’ main concern is keeping their garden properly watered and irrigated. Garden hoses and reels are one solution, but for a gift that’s out of the ordinary, consider buying your gardener a coil hose. These are great in that while they can be extended up to 100 feet, they retract into a neat little coil. Besides making storage a snap, these hose never get tangled, and are fun to use!

Storage and Handling Items ($50 and up)

For an extra-special gift, consider a garden cart or wheelbarrow. There are all types of carts on the market, including some multi-purpose carts that can be used as a cart or a dolly. Carts are available in a variety of materials including polyurethane, steel, and aluminum, and prices can exceed $200.

For additional storage of gardening supplies, consider buying your gardener a new storage box or mini-shed. No one can have too much storage! Some of these units have built-in organizers and will fit in a corner of the yard or on a porch or deck, keeping all his or her tools in one place.

If all else fails, you can always pick up a gift card to a home improvement or gardening store. That way, your gardener can buy plants, seeds, or whatever is needed at that time of year. One thing for sure, gardeners always seem to be able to find something they need, no matter what the season!
