Garden FlagsAnother way of displaying your prized garden flags, is with an arbor frame. These also anchor into the ground in the same manner as the “F” mount, but come as a complete iron frame, with a decorative top or arch. Your flag fits on a rod below the top decoration, which will suspend it higher in the air. The arbor frames are generally anywhere from 68-72” high, and allow for the use of longer flags or banners. They look great placed mid-way down the rows of a garden, in a bed of tall perennials, or in an area of the yard that has a slight dip or hollow. If you want to go a little higher, try a flag hanger, made in the same shape as a coat hanger, but with decorative curls and embellishments to the iron frame. Your flag will slip over the bottom bar, and can be hung by the special hook at the top, from a tree branch, a nail on the underside of the porch eave, or from the roof beam in your greenhouse. Garden flags, being smaller, also make a charming accent in other areas. With a decorative iron arm bracket, you can hang one from the post that holds your mailbox, place a pair to either side of the patio stairs, or mount them as a series of along the edge of a fence. Exterior decoration is a whole new world with the variety offered in decorative garden flags. Salute the seasons with scenes of flowers, leaves, characters and greetings. Welcome your friends, or honor a special occasion by flying the flag for a special birthday or anniversary. And don’t forget the holidays! Whether it’s Thanksgiving, Christmas, Halloween or Easter, you’ll find something exciting to make your home and garden, a little brighter. While you’re at it, why not brighten someone else’s day? Garden flags make a great gift for all occasions. Give friends and family a bracket or pole mount, and you’re all set when it comes to choosing a present for their next special day. Care and Use of Garden FlagsA flag hung from a pole on an arbor or eave will fly in the wind and draw the eye of onlookers upward. Kits are available for affixing short, wooden poles onto solid surfaces. This type of installation allows the flag to be angled, taking full advantage of its size and beauty, and it also provides easy access for removing your flag. Hanging from elevated areas, flags will catch the wind and offer a relaxing background rhythm and motion to relax the mind. Do you have a spot in your garden that just will not allow plants to grow? Do you need to hide an unsightly electrical box or other unnatural element in your outdoor retreat? Flags, strategically placed, can be the remedy to your problem. They are available in many sizes and shapes, so no matter what your space requirements are, there is likely a flag to suit your needs. Traditionally, flags are attached to a flagpole, but unless the pole is angled, they drape in a way that hides their beauty. The alternative is to purchase an iron display rod that can be inserted directly into the dirt. Display rods allow a flag to be displayed sideways, like a wall hanging would be displayed in a home. Another advantage is that a display rod can be placed virtually anywhere, so you can fill empty areas or shield unsightly items. They can be easily removed to allow access to an electrical box, and then replaced just as easily. For a small garden or patio area, miniature display poles with small flags work well. The display rod can be slipped into a large pot. Next to a door, a mini flag displayed with a grouping of various sized potted plants can be inviting. These small flags may also be used to line a pathway or flowerbed, and the flags can be changed seasonally to decorate for holidays. Remember, flags that are subjected to wind and sunlight will deteriorate and fray, and may need to be replaced often. To minimize the effects of weathering, remove the flag from its pole and store it when you are not occupying your outdoor retreat. Be sure that any fabric to be stored is completely dry or it will mildew. Most flags can be washed by hand in a mild solution of detergent and water. Do not use bleach on colored fabric. Trim frayed edges with scissors, and let the flag drip dry on the display rod or flagpole. If you care for a flag, it can last for many seasons. Written by Shauna Smith Duty | ||||||||
