Garden AccessoriesStepping stones will enhance the look; however, you may also want to place them so that you can walk through your garden without destroying your plants. Of course, you will be proud of your work. Why not add a decorative stone that reads "Welcome to My Garden". Place your own name on the stone for a personal touch. If you want a more colorful accent, then choose a gazing ball. Worried about breakage? These balls are available in stainless steel or copper, too. Do you have a favorite animal? Perhaps, the combination of a frog holding a gazing ball will be exactly what you are looking for. How about placing a small pond in your garden? Fortunately, you no longer need to hire a pro to install an artificial pond for you. Kits are available with a pre-formed basin, pump, fountainhead and realistic faux stones for decoration. Just dig a hole and set up your 30-gallon pond in an afternoon. You can also add lighting to your entire garden with the new solar lights that require no electrical wiring. All you have to do is decide where you want the lights. Hanging moroccan lanterns are another light source that can be used. Both are available in a wide range prices, styles and colors to help you create a unique look that is all your own. Naturally, there are accents that are especially fitting for a holiday theme. Speaking of holidays and gift ideas, you can please even the hardest person to buy for on your list with something for the outdoors. Whether it is a wind chime or a larger ornament, such as a bird bath, they are sure to appreciate and enjoy it. Garden DecorationsGarden accents are decorations that subtly add to the style and atmosphere of your garden. Accents include arches and arbors; fences (don’t feel you need an entire fence you can just use a rail or two); doors (why not add an old weathered door against a shed or garage and use for hanging or climbing plants); lattice; stone (boulders, flat stones or gravel); ornaments (weather vanes, items purchased in a garden store, rustic items you find in an antique shop or salvage yard); statues; furniture; and containers (flower pots, hanging baskets, wood barrels, and wash bins.) Just remember to be consistent with your theme. Fence, gates and lattice are inexpensive especially if bought second hand or made from scraps of wood. For a unique twist on lattice, go to a salvage yard and buy an old wooden door with 6-8 small window panes on the top half. Find one without the glass, so that you can use the grid of 6-8 sturdy squares as a support for vines or hanging baskets. Some vining plants include black-eyed Susan vines, mandevilla, moonvine, morning glory, clemantis, roses, nasturtium, and sweet pea. Paint the door if you like and set it against a shed or the side of your house. Inexpensive Fence Ideas If you like the look of fencing, but don’t like the barricaded look, just buy enough fence sections to line each side of your front entrance way near the house. Add shrubs and tall flowers behind the fence, and shorter colorful flowers in front. Look for buildings that are being demolished and notice if there are piles of brick or wood lying around. If you see something you like, ask the workers if you can grab a few pieces. The material is probably perfectly weathered and ideal for prairie or farm-style gardens. Use this to make your own fence or birdhouse. For a homemade cottage or nautical look take a few rounded logs at varying lengths (4 feet and under) and place them in your garden area. There are two ways to connect the logs using nautical rope. First, you can drill a hole through the log near the top and run the rope from log to log allowing it to snag in the middle, or you can wrap the rope several times near the top of the log before repeating this process on the next log. This look mimics that seen near beaches and boathouses. Another idea is to use a series of similar doors found at salvation or salvage stores. Remove all hardware and glass and secure the door in the ground on its side. You may want to wrap the part to be placed in the ground with waterproof landscape sheeting to protect the wood from rotting. What about plastic border fencing which can be had cheaply at discount stores? This is an easy way to add interest to the back of shorter gardens, around sheets or as edging, If you don’t like the stark white options available in the store, simply spray paint them any color or design you want! Who said your fence had to be made out of wood, iron or plastic. You can create wonderful fences with hedges and stones or brick. The picture to the left is a very formal look, but an informal (and fragrant) option would be rose hedges. Many natural grasses grown to 6, even 14 feet high creating the perfect natural fence. A final idea is to buy one or two pieces of rod iron fencing and place them at the back of your garden for a classy, yet subtle decoration. Garden Chachkees Garden Chachkees are little decorations you place here and there to help tie in the theme. These can be decorative plaster garden spheres, stepping stones, statues or fountains. Thanks to movies like Amelie and Travelocity commercials, garden gnomes have never been so cool. Benches are wonderful additions and can be purchased new, found at a salvage yard or garage sale, or hey, you can build your own. Containers Container gardening is becoming more popular each year, especially with apartment dwellers and townhouse owners. With containers you can create stunning gardens by using various plants in an array of decorative containers and stands. Height and balance can often be achieved more easily with a container garden than with a traditional one! Don’t limit your “container” to the plastic or clay type sold in garden stores. You can use anything from old bathtubs, wash bins, wood barrels, logs, and small buckets, whatever. If you can fill it and add drainage holes you can plant in it. Other ideas for plastic and old containers is to paint, wallpaper or stucco them. You can even wrap decorative rope around it, just be sure to use adhesive to secure it. If you have a mailbox at the end of a driveway, add plants to the base and a hanging basket to a post. Decks and patios can be transformed into gardens with colorful and lush hanging plants, and containers on stairs, along windowsills and balanced on railings. Older homes might have hooks on the side of the house or garage from clotheslines. Use these for hanging baskets or flowering bags. Look around your property. What areas around the house can benefit from container plants? There might be a bare corner of cement next to a garage that can be transformed into a garden oasis with just a few colorful plants. Picking the Right Garden DecorIf you’re planning a pond, consider planning a garden around it, to increase the visual impact. Whether it’s going to be a natural pond or one that is a liner set into the ground, once it is set up, you can go to work and landscape the surrounding area. A rockery that encircles the pond is an excellent choice, and gives you the opportunity to scatter plants in the spaces. You can also add rock solar spot lights that are made to look like imitation boulders. Set these along the edge where they’ll shine on features like a charming Roman reproduction fountain and birdbath, or a pedestal in the middle of the pond, holding a gazing ball. Little touches like this, add to your enjoyment in the evening hours as well as the daylight. Perhaps you’re just looking for a focal point for the gardens you have. In that case, consider one of the many fountains and birdbaths that are not only decorative, but functional as well. The cherub fountain and birdbath adds a very antique look to the garden, while the exquisite and colorful mosaic tile birdbaths are truly unique, and liven up any space where you put one. Planters will help carry the riot of color from your gardens, right to your front steps. If you have a wide porch or veranda, the Grecian pedestal urns are perfect for bringing a bit of the garden closer to the house. Window boxes are also helpful in making the predominant color of your gardens complement the house or shutter colors. Nesting planters look delightful when placed in wire hangers along the railing of a patio or stairway. And hanging pots will add a dash of color anywhere you choose to put them, whether it is under the eave of the garage, or hung on the limb of a tree. Charm the gnomes right out of their hiding places by putting some replicas in your garden! These whimsical and humorous figures are a great favorite with adults and children alike. Other popular figurines include cats, raccoons, rabbits, frogs, ladybugs, and for special spots, an animal that is upright, and holds a miniature gazing ball. Don’t forget the garden flags, either. These can be a decoration all by themselves, or you can match them to your house flags. They look particularly nice before the flowers are in full bloom, and add to the impressive range of color, afterwards. Plus, you can change them to suit a holiday, special occasion, or to greet the changing seasons. Brackets and poles for hanging garden flags come in a variety of shapes that will allow you to place them at an angle, or hang them vertically. There is so much more to garden décor than there used to be. But that just means you’re going to have so much more fun, choosing accessories to go with your flowerbeds and shrubs. | ||||||||
