Garden FountainsFountains sprung up, quite literally, throughout the town, in order to supply the inhabitants with an element crucial to life. Only in the richer sections, did they become an object of decoration, although they still served as horse troughs and birdbaths. Fountain art became more and more elaborate, featuring mythical gods, water sprites, cherubs, and the ubiquitous dolphin, which made one of its first and most notable appearances on a fountain created by sculptor Jean-Claude Rambot in 1667. The fountain, a very curious thing with four huge dolphins, gets even curioser as Alice would say, when you get up close and see that the sea creatures have scales. Given the time period, it’s highly unlikely that Rambot even knew what a dolphin looked like, and the representatives in his Four Dolphins fountain, at Aix, France, certainly bear that out. Decorative waterworks are no longer the exclusive realm of the rich and spoiled. Many homeowners have chosen to add a garden fountain to their outdoor décor, as a focal point, or an accessory placed amongst flowerbeds and creeping ground cover. Not only are they attractive in the daytime, but a fountain that is illuminated at night by solar lights adds another dimension to your landscaping. Fountains are fairly easy to install, once you’ve prepared a level area, and made sure that you have the appropriate outlets for electrical pumps. Maintenance however, can be a confusing issue. There are no hard and fast rules for keeping a garden fountain clean. But remember when placing a fountain in the full sun, you’re going to grow algae in the bowl, and on wet surfaces. And while you don’t need to uproot the whole thing, it still needs attention on a regular basis of every few weeks. A quick scrub with a brush, and a few drops of bleach, will clean and disinfect it. If you’re worried about residue from the bleach, you can substitute household vinegar. Even in partial sun, algae can be a problem, and then there are the bugs, and the birds that like to use the fountain for bathing, and for a bathroom. So if you’re going to invest in a garden fountain to make your lawn look good, keep the fountain looking good with regular cleaning, so it continues to bubble and burble while you sit under a tree and enjoy the whole effect of your outdoor décor. | ||||||||
