Frog CollectiblesFrogs aren’t exactly designed to be the most charming of creatures with their bulging eyes, webbed hind feet, and wet/slimy skin, but those features allow them to survive in the wet environment necessary for froggy life. Toads, on the other hand, (yes, you can hold them) have short hind legs better suited to walking, warty and dry skin, and “poison” glands behind their eyes. The vast majority of toads aren’t really poisonous though, they simply squirt a foul substance when picked up by a predator, causing them to drop their dinner, posthaste. Toads, with a few literary exceptions, have not captured the imagination of adults and children alike, as the frog has. Frogs as fine drama/art go back as far as Greek playwright Aristiophanes (448-388B.C.) who penned “The Frogs”, and hops along to “The Frog Prince”, which is actually an adapted version of the original German tale by the brothers Grimm. Although they aren’t figures of romance in real life, frogs can be pretty darn interesting, especially when they pelt you out of the blue…literally. People are enamored of old expressions like “raining cats and dogs”, but how many times do you hear someone say, “it’s raining frogs”? Getting beaned by frogs is not all that unusual an occurrence. It often happens when a tornado or waterspout passes over an area with a population of small or young frogs, sweeping them up due to the vacuum effect of high-speed winds, and dropping them elsewhere when their bluster runs out. The Scientific American was one of the first publications to report this phenomenon in its July 12, 1873 edition, when frogs descended on Kansas City, Missouri. Frogs have even been sent into space, where great discoveries were made. Frogs can “barf”! Up until then, it was thought frog anatomy made it impossible to eject the contents of their stomach, but while in orbit, frogs were observed to eject not only the contents of the stomach, but the stomach itself. The frogs then cleaned the whole thing off with their front feet, and swallowed it again. Unconfirmed reports say that this was filed in NASA’s “more than we needed to know” category. Of course, the most famous and beloved of frogs, has to be Kermit, of the Muppets. Leland, Mississippi lays claim to spawning Kermit, since his creator and voice, the late Jim Henson spent most of his childhood, there. Henson’s boyhood friend, Kermit Scott, is believed to have loaned his name to the Muppet. Frog collectibles are now big business, indoors or out. Gardens spout jets of water from frog fountains, while crouching frogs of ceramic, stone or vinyl, lurk in the Lupins. A little breeze and you’ll hear frogs tinkle merrily from wind chimes on the patio. You can even relax in your den, to the softly running streams that circulate from your indoor frog fountain while checking your frog rain gauge outside the window. Figurines available in frog collectibles range from realistic wildlife representations, to the whimsical porcelain “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” trio as porcelain ornaments. Froggy Facts
