Fishing DecorIf you can’t find what you’re looking for, there are many online websites that sell fishing memorabilia, ornaments, sculptures, metal art, knick knacks, lamps, ship’s wheels and lake related items, such a lighthouses and sea birds. All of these things give the visitor the feeling of stepping into a fisherman’s paradise. Use fishing line to hang an old fisherman’s basket on the wall. Take four old rods and reels. Hang two of them on each side of the basket, crossed. This makes a great display. Bobbers, (floats) hooks and lures can hang out of the basket to give it a more authentic look. These can also be hung, using a piece of fishing line, from the rods and reels. String an old fishing net for a hammock, similar to those sold for children’s stuffed toys, across the corners of a room. Decorate it with lures, bobbers, sinkers, and other fishing paraphernalia. Place several large sea shells in the netting or even an authentic looking replica of a starfish. A rod and reel can be laid over the netting, as can a fishing basket, or fisherman’s vest or hat. Purchase metal or wooden signs to add a touch of nostalgia to the room, or make your own if you are handy. “I’d Rather Be Fishing, “or “Gone Fishing,” are popular signs that can be found at flea markets and novelty shops. If you have room, a small wooden dory can be placed in a corner. This can be used to display fishing nets, tackle, rods and reels, fishing baskets, tackle boxes, stringers, a cooler, vests, jackets or boots, or even a life preserver. Visit a nautical themed shop. Pick up fisherman paperweights, bottle openers, key chains mouse pads, and more. Anything to do with fishing is fair game. A few fishing themed knick knacks will add a touch of class. A great idea for a desk is a fishing lamp. These come in a variety of themes, including bass, trout, lighthouses, fishing boats and children fishing. You may also find fishing themed CD holders, metal wall hangings, tapestries, stacking tables, cushions and mugs. If you find these items difficult to find, try searching online nautical or fishing themed shops. There are hundreds to be found on the Web, and the prices are fairly reasonable. Tea light candle holders are available in a variety of fishing themes. Fisherman’s lanterns, lighthouses, bass and trout are all popular. Ornaments with a fishing theme will help turn your room into a fisherman’s paradise. Ice fishing huts, fishermen in boats, children fishing at the old fishing hole, and fisherman’s cabins are all available in novelty shops or online. A fisherman’s hat decorated with fish hooks and lures looks great on a hat rack standing in a corner or near a door of the room. Place a pair of fisherman’s boots at the base of the rack, then hang a fisherman’s vest and coat on the rack beside the hat. This gives the impression that the fisherman of the family is preparing to leave on a fishing trip. Fish bookends give a nice touch to a bookshelf, or fill a fisherman’s basket with old fishing magazines and place it beneath the shelf or beside a fisherman’s chair in a corner. An old antique chair can be used here as well. Be sure to recover it with a fabric that has a fishing theme. There’s a wide variety of ideas to use for a fishing themed room. Scout out the places mentioned in this article, or take a trip to a memorabilia and collectibles store. There’s no limit to the wondrous items that you will unearth. Then, use your imagination and have fun. Happy decorating. Reel in Fishing DecorBelieve it or not, it’s possible to introduce the theme into your living room and not feel like you should be wearing hip waders and carrying a basket. It’s simply a matter of a few tasteful additions to what you already have for furniture and accessories. In fact, it fits in beautifully with natural earth tones, and cool greens. Start off by tossing some decorative pillows on the couch or chairs, which have patterns with various fish on them. They come in almost any style you like, from tasseled, to plain material, to the embroidered and stuffed pillow tops to be found at craft fairs. While we’re on the couch, a framed fishing print hung on the wall over it is also a great addition and focal point. Your local gallery will have its own selection of artists, or you can shop online for the print that strikes the right note. If it is unframed, this gives you more latitude in choosing a frame and matt that not only complements the print, but also the general color scheme of your furniture or carpet. For the coffee table, there is a slate table top fountain to provide a reminder of the running streams where your fishermen go. Not only are they decorative, they help to keep the humidity level up when your home heating system is running. On the end tables, how about a grouping of brass fish figurines? They’re interesting, carry out the theme, and coordinate nicely with many styles and color of furnishings. For the sportsman who has a den or study, you can cater to their personal tastes a little more. Wall-mountings that hold a favorite fly rod are always a great gift, and preserve that most important piece of equipment, even as it adds to your fishing décor. Over on the desk or shelf, a pair of bookends featuring a bass rearing and leaping from the waters under it. You can even get detailed brass wall plates for the light switch in a bass motif as well. And for a little fun, if you hunt around online, you can still locate one of the “fad” gifts of the 90s, the singing wall plaque fish, including Tommy Trout and Billy Bass. These are incredibly lifelike rubber/vinyl molded fish that respond to either sound or the switch on the plate, and not only sing, but flip flop to the music. Of course, there’s always the bathroom, where you can create an outdoorsman’s dream with blue paint for the walls, to highlight the matching shower curtain, towels, and toilet seat with a pattern of trout flies. Add towel racks, wall plates, and even mirrors flanked with cavorting fins, and your room is complete! Once you consider the options, you’ll be hooked on fishing décor! | ||||||||
