Dolphin Figurines

DolphinsThe dolphin alone, beyond all other, nature has granted what the best philosophers seek: friendship, for no advantage. - Plutarch, 62A.D.

Long seen as a cute and cuddly creature unique unto itself, the dolphin is actually a small-toothed whale, although they are nowhere near the size of that other gargantuan mammal. Most dolphin species average six feet in length, with males only a few inches larger than females. The Bottle-Nose however, can reach up to nine feet in length and 440 lbs. in weight. It’s kind of surprising they aren’t bigger, considering that dolphins eat as much as 60 lbs. of their favorite food in a day. For most species, this would be herring, mackerel and sardines, although some prefer squid, shrimp, and other crustaceans.

Dolphin Figurines

The dolphin is a warm-blooded mammal, having an internal temperature comparable to Man’s. And like humans, they breathe air, which necessitates surfacing every few minutes to take a long breath in, and exhale it in a short blast.

The intensely social nature of dolphins, along with their distinct methods of communication, which has lead researchers to use them in experiments to locate underwater landmines, argue that there is an intelligence there, that needs only to be unlocked through communication with humans. But are they really the “big brains” that scientists claim?

Well, consider whether brain size is relative or not. In Man, the average brain weighs about 1450 grams, with some as large as 1700 grams. Its growth is pretty much complete by the time a human is 17 years old, although their external body may continue to grow. That’s roughly after 22% of their life expectancy. On the other hand, dolphin brains slow their growth rate at about eight years of age, which is earlier in their life pattern, since they can live up to 50 years. But the brain continues to grow, reaching the upper weight limits of a human brain.

In comparison, a chimpanzee’s brain averages only 350 grams, or half the size of a dolphin brain. Chimpanzees are supposed to be Man’s nearest relative, genetically speaking. In experiments where pushing an item resulted in pleasurable rewards, dolphins actually watched researchers assemble the equipment, then immediately used it correctly. The chimpanzees took an average 100 tries to get the prize.

The dolphin’s brain even manages not to be responsible for their breathing system, while providing a unique “conscious” control for it. Since respiration in dolphins is not part of the automatic nervous system, it becomes a voluntary action. Which leads people to ask “What do they do while asleep?” Slumbering beneath the sea means that only one half of the dolphin’s brain is snoozing while the other remains awake, and making them breathe. The sides of the brain switch after a while, and reverse their roles.

For character and sheer beauty, there is little marine life more attractive, which has given a boost to the market for dolphin figurines, whether bronze sculptures, glass candleholders, or birthstone statues. Man’s love affair with the dolphin extends to many crafts including weaving, painting, etching, carving, and hand-blown glass. Dolphin figurines may come as a single example in crystal or natural stone, but they are more often found in the social groups that they are known for in the wild.

Dolphin Trivia
  • A dolphin’s eyes move independently of each other, allowing it to see in more than one direction at a time.
  • The eye on the side of the brain that remains awake while the other half sleeps, remains open.
  • Dolphins are pregnant for 12 months
  • There are five species of river dolphins with the Whitefin Dolphin of China, being near extinction, their numbers having dropped to less than 100
  • A dolphin’s closest land relatives are thought to be cows, pigs, and sheep.
  • Dolphins can dive to 1,000 ft. down, while holding their breath for 5-8 minutes
