One of the last finishing touches that anyone thinks of when it comes to interior d�cor, are decorative wall plates to cover your light switches. Yet when you stop to think, they are the perfect small accent to pair with another, and can be easily matched to the overall decorating scheme.

In the study, you might have predominantly wood paneling, desk and dark rug, but a lovely set of bronze elephant figurines on the desk or file cabinet. Pick up that single small accent with a matching bronze plate for the light switch. And carry it even further if you wish, by hanging a bronze finished light fixture. For a feminine bedroom where all is sweetness and light pink curtains, carpeting and canopied bed, pick up either the main pink, or the rosebuds in the matching sheets and comforter set that also goes with the wallpaper. In fact, if you have papered the room yourself, you can take a plain wall plate and cover it with the same paper, without having to look for a china plate that matches your pattern. Simply cover them with the same wallpaper you�ve hung, and nobody will know they�re there, but you.

Surprisingly, little accessories like wall plates, can be some of the biggest hits. In material and style, you can match them to light fixtures, upholstery material, the pattern in a priceless oriental rug, and more. Wall plates come in delicate filigree metal, hand carved and polished wood, or as hand-painted pottery creations. Each is distinctive, and can announce the light�s location, or simply blend into the overall color and pattern of the wall.

As a general hint, smooth surfaced wall plates are not always good choices for the bathroom or kitchen, where wet hands may be reaching for the light switch and slip off it. In a room that is used for entertaining, you might consider any of the dark woods, or textured metal wall plates as a way to make sure that family fingerprints stay in the family!

Wall plates are not just for the distinguished look, either. They are loads of fun, whatever the decorating scheme you�ve chosen. Do you know someone who has cows in the kitchen? A cow wall plate would make a great special occasion gift. Wrap it in a cow tea towel and dishcloth! How about the bathroom that your uncle did in fishing d�cor?
