Clay Pot Fountains

Clay PotClay was one of the first materials that Man took into his hands and began using to create useful articles. No doubt an accidental discovery when decomposed rock was mixed with water and found to be malleable into whatever shape they wished, clay became a valuable resource.

The components of clay are primarily silicon, oxygen and aluminum, with other minerals providing a variety of characteristics. Potters work with what is called a “clay body”, or a mixture of the various types of clay, to provide specific qualities, such as water resistance. Particles are like flat sheets, and move over each other easily, to be shaped and formed.

Clay Pot Fountains

There are three basic types of clays: earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. The oldest clay pot found, was basic earthenware, discovered in Catalhoyuk, Turkey. The pot, which is estimated to be up to 6,000 years old, is made from a clay body that was fired at a low temperature. This type of clay pot, was usually still porous. It would be some years before Man discovered glazes made from clays with more silica in the mix, which would make pots waterproof. But his natural curiosity, would lead Man to experiment with clay and firing, by which he developed stoneware, or clay fired at a high enough temperature to make it hold water. Then came porcelain, a white clay that is fired to a point where it reduces to a mostly vitreous composition, and is translucent when the pot is thin-walled.

Clay pots can also tell us a lot about the people and cultures in the country where they were found. For example, the remains of a late second century Japanese clay pot, has a black ink character inscribed on the upper portion. The relic was unearthed in Nagareyma, Chiba Prefecture, an undeveloped area of the country at that time. Very few people, with the exception of those involved in trade or diplomacy, were literate, so the finding of this pot indicates that there was a movement of population from west to east, sometime around the third century.

There is something evocative about these bits of history, which make clay pot fountains, not only an interesting piece of home décor, but one that reminds us of a time when life was simpler, and more peaceful.
