Christmas Tree Toppers

Tree ToppersChristmas trees are among the most common decorations during the winter holiday season. Although it is a Christian tradition, even non Christian families display decorated trees. Christmas trees are covered by many things: wreathes, garland, ornaments, candy canes, and popcorn. There is, however, one piece that is meant to be the ultimate showstopper: The tree topper. Different countries have different tree topper traditions. Tree toppers around the world can be as different as night and day.

USA
Virtually anything goes in the USA. As long as the tree topper is beautiful, it is welcome. The most common, however, are the angel and the star. The star represents the North Star that led the three wise men to the manger.

Christmas Tree Toppers Around the World

Italy
The Italian Christmas Tree is much different than any other country. It is called a Ceppo. It is a wooden tiered "tree" with a nativity scene on the bottom shelf. The other shelves are filled with Christmas decorations and presents. On top of the Ceppo is a pineapple. The pineapple means "Welcome" in Italian tradition.

Great Britain
In the late 1800's, a new Christmas tree topper was popping up all over Great Britain: the national flag. People called this the Union Jack. Great Britain was the most powerful nation in the world and it's citizens took pride in that fact. Not only were the tree toppers flags, but the Christmas trees began to be covered with patriotic decorations as well. Flag ornaments were not uncommon during this time.

Germany
In some parts of Germany it is tradition to add a candle to the top of a Christmas tree. Hundreds of years ago, this candle was authentic. Today, most families have Christmas lights that resemble candles. This tree topper tradition has also been carried into the USA. While a candle is not the most popular Christmas tree topper, it is certainly not uncommon.

Ireland
Ireland has Christmas tree topper traditions similar to the USA. The most popular type of tree topper is the angel. The star follows closely behind. Not only are the tree toppers similar to the USA, but the trees are decorated similarly as well. Garland and holly cover ornament cloaked trees.

Some families have fun changing their Christmas tree themes each year. One year it might be a tree covered with snowmen. Another year it might have a color theme. With each different style comes a different tree topper. Other families, however, choose to keep one beautifully styled tree each year. Usually the tree has a favorite tree topper. Perhaps by learning the various traditions across the world, families can incorporate new traditions into the holiday. The traditions of other countries may be foreign, but they can also be quite charming. Christmas tree toppers are just the icing on the cake when it comes to different traditions across the world.
