Choosing a Garden Flag

Choosing a Garden FlagAny flag that is flown in your garden to add color or decoration can be classed as a garden flag. A garden flag reflects your personality and is a great way to express yourself while personalizing your garden. Garden flags can be used to demonstrate patriotism on holidays, to signify your favorite season or to add a pictorial of something that is meaningful to you, such as angels, birds, butterflies or wildlife.

If you are a patriot, fly your country’s flag in your garden. Many Americans grew produce during WWII, which was sent to troops overseas. The farmers who took part in the program flew the American flag in their gardens to show they were contributing to the war effort. If you decide to fly a national flag in your garden, brush up on flag etiquette. There’s a proper way to fly a national flag.

In early spring, many gardens are dull. Early flowers like daffodils, crocus, hyacinths and tulips die off before other flowers bloom. This is a good time to fly a garden flag. It will add color to your garden and colored flags attract birds to flowers. They also keep squirrels and other small creatures out of freshly planted seed beds.

Bird and insect garden flags are popular in flower gardens. Bluejay, bluebird, butterfly, cardinal, hummingbird and ladybug flags are especially popular.

If you can’t find a garden flag that suits you, create your own. Go to a fabric store and buy a panel of fabric that depicts something that you particularly like. These come in a variety of themes, including butterflies, hummingbirds, bear, deer and wolves, to name a few. Take the fabric home and hem both ends of the panel, making sure you allow room to insert a piece of doweling. Then, add a hanger to the top and spray the fabric with a waterproofing spray, following the manufacturer’s directions. When you’ve allowed your flag to dry for the specified time, hang it from a metal hanging basket bracket, or attach it to a bracket mounted on a fence.

If you can’t find a panel of fabric that you like, buy a piece of plain fabric and some waterproof fabric paint. Paint a picture on the flag and spray with sealer. Use your imagination to create a beautiful garden flag that’s one of a kind. The flag will add beauty and color to your garden while making it much more personalized.

Remember that your garden flag will be out in inclement weather, so take special care when waterproofing it. If you purchase garden flags, be certain they are made of durable material.

You can leave the same garden flag up all year ‘round or change it with the changing seasons. There are a large variety of garden flags to choose from. Fly a Christmas garden flag during the holiday season, or fly a winter themed flag, such as snowmen, children skating, or birds at a bird feeder.

If you live in a northern climate that gets a lot of snow, hang your flag in a higher position where it will be seen. The flag will add beauty and a touch of color to your garden during the harsh winter months.

When choosing or creating a garden flag, let your imagination run wild. There are no rules that say what your garden flag must look like, so make a very personalized choice. This will allow your garden to reflect your personality and character. Have fun and enjoy!
