 | Of all God's creatures, there is only one that cannot be made slave of the leash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve the man, but it would deteriorate the cat. - Mark Twain
Cats have been straying around Earth, for some 200 million years, in one form or another. The earliest examples of fossils resembling today’s purring kitties, are about 12 million years old, give or take a few centuries. As cats will, they multiplied and spread over the Earth, and by three million years ago, there were a variety of cats to be found almost anywhere on Earth, except the extreme Artic, Antarctic, and Australia, where there was no tree cover to hunt prey.

Cat Figurines
That’s when some oddities developed in our furry friends, that set the big cats apart from…well, the other cats. Panthera, the cats that roar, can do so because the hyoid bone at the base of their skull, is made partly of cartilage, and that mobility allows the vocal chords to make a different sound. Your average tabby has a rigid hyoid, that only allows for purring. But that’s enough, considering that cats’ sound of contentment runs at about 26 cycles per second, roughly the speed of a diesel engine that’s idling. The “big” cats never carry their tails upright, either. Domestic cats are the only member of the species, capable of doing that. Possibly because 10% of their 245 bones are found in the tail.
When it comes to your Tom’s tootsies, you might have noticed that there are five toes on each of the front feet, and four on each of the hind feet. This is common to all cats, large and small. But somewhere back in the age of tall ships and sailing, cats with multiple toes, and even double “feet”, began showing up in America. It’s believed they were brought into the country on ships importing goods from England, where cats with extra toes were considered good luck, by Captains. When they got here, usually in ports like Boston, they jumped ship and bred with the local population. The phenomenon, known as polydactylism, still recurs today in randomly bred pets, and is frequently seen in the Maine Coon cat, a breed developed in the Northeast U.S., where it’s just possible that some of those ships cats, had been pussyfooting around.
Cats became a large part of many cultures, long ago. Cat figurines have been found in tombs and in archaeological digs. Egyptians were known to worship a type of cat that is thought to be the precursor of our modern pets. Today, cats come on anything you can possibly name, from kitchenware, to bedding, clothing for all ages and both sexes, paintings, wall hangings, and calendars. The cat figurines available for ailurophiles that just can’t get enough of all things feline, include fine carvings in semi-precious stone, hand-painted Chinese porcelain, and wooden images of the Egyptian deity. Because cats know they were once worshipped as a god, and they’ve never forgotten it.
Cat Tales
- Cats are more likely to land on their feet, with fewer injuries, if falling a distance equivalent to less than two stories, or more than seven stories.
- Some cats, notably those of oriental ancestry such as the Siamese, have a disorder called “pica”, which causes them to not only chew, but actually consume anything made of wool. The term applies to an appetite for any substance not meant to be eaten.
- The expression “cat got your tongue?” originates from sailing days, when the crew was punished by whipping with the cat-o-nine tails, the prospect of which, often rendered a man speechless.
- “Curiosity killed the cat” is a 16th century English expression, corrupted from the original “care killed the cat”, with “care” meaning worry. Women being noted as catty, and sticking their nose into, or worrying about other people’s business, were often the target.
