BookendsYour home probably has many uses for bookends. Perhaps you or your son or daughter owns a set of Encyclopedias or other types of reference books. Bookends work well for storing an entire book series. If your child collects a certain series of books for children, bookends can be utilized to keep the set together on a shelf or desk in your child's room. In your child's room, you can choose children's bookends that relate to the theme or decor of the room. If your child adores a particular character or color, you can use bookends that will fit his/her tastes. Bookends can also be used in a home library or book collection shelf for organization and easy storage. Try to use bookends that compliment the room where they're located. In a "country" decor setting, bookends which have designs of animals, flowers or a country/western scenery would fit well. For shabby chic rooms, wooden antique style bookends make lovely additions. They are usually available in lighter colors or white as well. For a touch of elegance, brass, colonial or floral bookends will tremendously enhance the decor of the living area, dining room, or bedroom. More Bookend Themes Other themes that can be exhibited through bookends are jungle themes with elephants or monkeys. Bookends can display which recreation you love the most also, whether it be golfing, fishing, hunting or some other sport. Angelic bookends can be used to create a religious atmosphere in the room. No matter what your room's theme or decor, there are plenty of bookend styles to meet the needs. Bookends not only add a touch of elegance or beauty to an otherwise ordinary shelf, but also help to create a neat, organized area for storing your favorite books. Written by Candice Pardue BookendsHardcover books in particular, need to be stored properly. That means upright, covers closed, and the spine outward, so titles or author names can be read by anyone searching a shelf for the right book. Taking care of good books will make them last for years, and save the bindings, pages, and covers from wear and tear. Small collections, or special editions by a favored author, fit nicely on top of mantles, ledges, desktops, and shelves, with the addition of decorative bookends. In the home office, you might have need to refer to three or four books on a regular basis. Instead of having to get up over and over, place them between a pair of bookends that complement your décor. If you have gone in for the distinguished look of wood and leather, a pair of cast bronze bookends adds another touch of elegance. Maybe you’re a golfing enthusiast, in which case, a pair of matching bookends that feature a golf bag and clubs will hold your books on the game’s strategy, until you’re ready to reach for one again. Cookbooks in the kitchen can be lined up and waiting for the chef, between a pair of bookends that match your décor, whether it’s roosters, chickens, cows, or just solid wood or cast iron in a country theme. For your bedroom collection of nighttime reading, a pair of wooden bookends can either match the furniture, or be customized to the décor by adding silk flowers that match the pattern of your bedspread or curtains. If you really are a collector, and have shelves or bookcases full, but would like to make them look a little more distinctive, try this trick. Separate a shelf with metal book supports that slide under the end of a row, and keep that section of books flush to one end of the shelf. Do this on both sides, and create a space in the center, where you can place a pair of matching, decorative bookends in a pseudo-Roman gargoyle design, holding a special grouping of your favorite authors. Center a pair of bookends on every other shelf, or for a different look, create a diagonal line by placing the first pair of bookends on the left of the top shelf, the next on the center of a shelf, and the bottom pair on the right of the shelf. Add to the décor of your favorite rooms, by taking your best-loved books, CDs, photo albums, or scrapbooks, and placing them between your choice of themed, or hand-carved bookends. | ||||||||
