Do this on both sides, and create a space in the center, where you can place a pair of matching, decorative bookends in a pseudo-Roman gargoyle design, holding a special grouping of your favorite authors. Center a pair of bookends on every other shelf, or for a different look, create a diagonal line by placing the first pair of bookends on the left of the top shelf, the next on the center of a shelf, and the bottom pair on the right of the shelf.
