 | There is nothing in which the birds differ more from man than the way in which they can build and yet leave a landscape as it was before. – Robert Lynd
Alexander Wilson was a flop as a poet. Born in 1766 in Scotland, the young man penned page after page of what was kindly termed “boring” verse, but which did feature the raw, earthy life of the average Scot, along with something of the nature of the land and wildlife. He carried what skills he had to America in 1794, where he took up teaching, having been unable to get anyone to publish his works. Moving down the coast, he found himself in Grey’s Ferry, Pennsylvania, living just down the street from famed naturalist William Bartram.

Bird Figurines
At loose ends, and suffering periodic deep depressions, Bartram suggested he take up the sketching of birds, since his love of nature had not waned after leaving Scotland. In this, he would be more wildly successful, than he ever dreamed of as a poet. Nobody knows when his American Ornithology was conceived, but his creative passions turned to studying and reproducing the wildlife of America, and what time was left over, he devoted to finding a publisher. In 1808, the first of nine volumes made their appearance, even as Wilson was off on another trip, to drum up subscribers to pay for his project. These periodic journeys were frequently made on foot, and it was nothing for him to walk from Pennsylvania through Florida, recording the bird life of each region he passed through.
Wilson succeeded not only as the artist who captured birds in the full glory of their plumage and natural settings, but his observations were so plainly the work of someone with a passion for the subject, that the accompanying text far outstripped the quality of any poetry. But his self-imposed rough travel to study birds in their habitat, eventually took their toll, and he died in 1813.
While Wilson was doing the artwork for his “cyclopedia”, he mentored a young John James Audobon. Born in Santo Domingo but raised in France, Audobon immigrated to America in 1803, at the age of 18. He brought with him a passion for birds, nature and drawing. Over the next ten years, he would hunt, draw birds, and marry while living on the family property near Philadelphia. There, he conducted the first bird-banding experiment, discovering that Eastern Phoebes returned to the same nests, every year.
After a business failure, he left his wife and sons at home, and with nothing but a gun, drawing materials and an assistant, he set off down the Mississippi River to expand his growing collection of bird drawings. In 1826 he was off to England, with the first plates for the American Woodsman. That unqualified success was followed by an even bigger one, with Birds of America, a collection of 435 life-sized prints. Audobon’s works would soon eclipse those of his early mentor, Alexander Wilson.
From those two pre-eminent artists of nature, came the inspiration for others to produce bird figurines with the same attention to detail, that had made the books so compelling. Woodcarving in America turned from a simple pastime, occasionally useful for making duck decoys, to a highly competitive art, where outlining each barb on the shaft of a feather, became a challenge to the artist. Soon, such favorites as cardinals, hummingbirds, chickadees and doves were seen in crystal, porcelain, and hand-cast pottery. Bird figurines turned up on wedding cakes, mantels, and the shelves of collectors with an eye for wildlife art.
