Bear FigurinesBrown/Grizzly bears are perhaps the most feared in North America. They are substantially larger than the black bear, weighing up to 1500 pounds and standing eight feet high, and still able to run at 35mph, despite their size. They are most likely to attack a human, in defense of their cubs. Wildlife experts blame bear problems on the fact that many people leave available food sources out where bears can smell and pursue them, including camping supplies, meat hung outside cabins, and domestic farm animals kept close to the forest. Once they learn where food can be found, they have been known to return over and over, becoming territorial and aggressive with humans. The Grizzly becomes lethargic in Fall, from gaining up to 400 pounds against winter shortages. Their diet consists of berries, plants, roots, fungi, and fish. The American Black Bear is unique to North America, although there are 16 sub-species of other black bears. They are not nearly as large as the Grizzly, being only 4-7ft. in length, and weighing in at 500 lbs. They also don’t normally growl, except in the movies. Their noises consist chiefly of clicks, snuffs, and blowing air. Like the Grizzly, black bears are freeloaders, and are easily attracted to human sources of food, making them perennial pests around garbage dumps. Polar bears are the largest predators on land, and the largest of all bears, with females averaging 500-600 lbs., and males going up to 1500 lbs. Their only natural enemy, is Man. Thanks to international agreements on the hunting of polar bears, a population of some 25,000-40,000 roam the ice floes of the far Arctic. Their primary diet is the seal, and a bear will either wait by its air hole to capture one, or pursue it under the ice. Polar bears have been known to swim up to 100 miles in a single dip. Only six out of ten cubs live beyond a year. The single largest cause of death for sub-adult polar bears, is starvation. Bear figurines are among the most unique and individual animal art images that you’ll find in homes, today. Some of the most prized reproductions, are Eskimo soapstone carvings that carry with them, a whiff of the far North in their simplicity. Bears as art entered the home decorating field long ago, starting with teddy bears, cookie jars, garden statues, and blankets depicting the rich diversity of their appearance. Whether porcelain or hand-carved wood, bear figurines add a touch of Nature to any collection of wildlife ornaments, and are a poignant and charming reminder, that Nature does not belong only to Man.
