Bathroom Rugs

Bathroom RugsIndoor plumbing is an amazing (and much appreciated) invention. Imagine living all those centuries with freezing dirt, tile or mosaic floors. Forsooth, cold tootsies would be the order of the day.

When someone says indoor plumbing, they almost always mean the toilet. But plumbing per se, also meant pipes that carried water, and hence the method of filling bath tubs.

History makes note of a wide variety of indoor conveniences, although few of them boasted the amenities we have today. In Babylon for instance, King Sargon the Great enjoyed a really big bath room, literally and figuratively. It was a room with the floor and lower half of the walls lined with baked bricks, and a slope in the floor leading to a drain. Water was just poured over the bather and drained away. There are reports that he also had indoor seats used as toilets, with drains leading to the sewer and thence the river. Remains of the drains and piping have been found, but the conveniences conveniently vanished. Still, not bad for the 7th century B.C.

History of Bathroom Rugs

Greece boasted short, squat, self-draining tubs in 432B.C. The blame for those was laid at the flat feet of Hippocrates who recommended sitting in the bath, and depressions for the feet can still be found in the ones that remain today. Flushes? Yes, they had them, but they didn’t flush. They were literally openings that went straight to the sewer pipes that ran under the dwellings.

Romans hadn’t advanced that much further than King Sargon. The ruins at Pompei revealed that they too used a bath room, with beautiful mosaics on the floor, but still a room dedicated solely to the bath that filled the room. They were also public, and used as social gathering places. But at home in ye olde villa, there were rudimentary toilets, and while they hadn’t quite been brought together with the bath yet, they were…right next to the oven. One palace uncovered, showed the remains of a cistern that was used to flush the household flushes, with another recessed closet in the kitchen, not four feet away from the oven. The hinges were still on the opening for the seat.

Eventually of course, Man did manage to bring his water inside via pipes and pumps. The tubs got longer, and along came the flush, the invention of which is still hotly debated. Yes, John Harrington did invent two of the three primary components in the late 1600s (the washdown system and valve), and no, Thomas Crapper did not finish it off. Mr. Crapper was a purveyor of fine porcelain pieces for the potty room, but it was one Albert Giblin who patented it in England, in 1898.

So here we are in modern times, with not only a toilet, but a tub and a wash basin, all cosily assembled in one room for our convenience. But we still have those tile floors. Sometimes linoleum, too. But regardless, most bathroom floors are as cold as the Roman mosaics, and ours aren’t covered with warm water unless the kids get frisky.

That’s where bathroom rugs can save the day for those midnight trips to get a drink, or the shock of a cold surface when you step out of a warm tub. They come in solid colors and patterns that will match the rest of your bathroom accessories. Most important of all, they have non-skid backing for safe use by the entire family. If they’re washable in the machine, that’s a real bonus.
