Bamboo Fountains

BambooWhile bamboo can be grown in other, more temperate climates, it’s most often associated with China because it is the main diet of the famous and furry, Panda Bear. The average adult Panda will consume about 40 pounds a day, of bamboo leaves and shoots.

That may seem like a lot, even for the dwindling population of these unique creatures, but bamboo is one of the fastest growing grasses on Earth, with dozens of varieties, some 40 of which make up the bulk of a Panda’s diet. Bamboo comes in dwarf species no more than a foot tall, and also timber form, that can grow up to 90 feet high.

Bamboo Fountains

In the laboratory under ideal conditions, some bamboo has grown almost four feet in 24 hours, but the average growth rate is around a foot each day. Mature bamboo for making furniture and other products, is harvested at the end of its two month growth cycle, when it’s around 80’ tall.

It may seem light and flimsy, but the longitudinal strength of bamboo is 17% greater than that of steel. The grass is a survivor as well, being the first plant to flower, after the bombing of Hiroshima. And bamboo is environmentally friendly, emitting more oxygen than an equivalent amount of pulpwood.

The tube shape of timber-type bamboo has been used for many things over time, including furniture, canes, musical instruments, and even bicycles. But it still maintains its link to the Orient, and as such, is frequently found in bamboo water fountains, where an artful arrangement of bamboo tubes will pass water from one to the other, creating a series of waterfalls and a medley of soothing sounds.
