Back Massagers

Back MassagersThe mention of “massage” often conjures up the picture of a very large Scandinavian lady, pummeling someone’s back with her hands. And while the movie or media image isn’t totally correct, that type of application, really is a part of genuine massages.

Massage encompasses a variety of techniques designed for different purposes, but all of them encompass the manipulation of soft body tissue, the purpose of which is to relax muscles, and disperse the build-up of harmful acids and other muscle byproducts.

The chopping motion that makes so many people chuckle, is called “tapotement”, and utilizes the edge of the hand or fingers, to strike the body with short, soft blows that creates an immediate tension and release effect.

Back Massagers

Among the more common techniques in massage, is “petrissage”, which involves the gathering, rolling, and kneading of the muscles. This generally follows “effleurage”, which is the long, slow strokes of a Swedish massage, that are used to relax muscles and tissue, to make them more pliable for handling, and make the client more relaxed for the next step in their massage.

Some methods of massage involve use of the fingers on specific points. “Trigger point therapy” for instance, uses concentrated finger pressure on a point where muscles have been spasming, inducing them to relax and reduce the pain. “Shiatsu” or acupressure massage, utilizes pressure points along the meridians, or invisible channels where energy flows through the body.

More and more people who find that their muscles are prone to tension caused by stress, are turning to using home products, including massage chairs, when they don’t have the time or energy to make appointments at a clinic. The chairs work on the same press and release principles of massage, and most come with a heat feature as well, to help relax and loosen up muscles before you turn on the massage feature.

For those who stand on their feet all day, and suffer pain and cramps in them later, something like the HoMedics foot massager is ideal to work away the knots and pain in your arches and heels. They come in a variety of styles that mimic such techniques as percussion massage, vibrating the muscles of the feet, or pressure and release methods, where the foot massager will duplicate a masseur’s thumb action, with rotating motions.

Feet are not the only body part that cramps, and for other areas like calves and shoulders, a hand-held percussion massager with adjustable settings for the intensity of the pressure applied, will help to reduce the tensions of a long day at your desk or computer.

Another handy alternative to battery-operated items, is the Glidepoint Massage Tool. These work much like a ballpoint pen, with a rolling head that applies only as much pressure to your body, as you exert on the tool. Roll it lightly or press harder, for the deeper cramps and aches in your arms and legs.

Massage therapy is nothing new. It’s been around for thousands of years. What’s new, is the ways in which you can enjoy the benefits at home or the office.
