 | Christmas is just around the corner. The time has almost come for putting up our Christmas tree and deciding how to decorate it this year. Some use the same ornaments year after year while others shop for new ones.
One of the timeless pieces that we decorate our trees with is the angel. Whether it is used as a tree topper or smaller angels placed on the tree itself, they are by far the most popular ornament. Angels playing the harp or French horn are especially appealing.
The first decorations as we think of them were handmade from scraps of material, pine branches and cones, berries, and mistletoe. Ornaments could be hand carved from pieces of wood. Lauscha, Germany was where glass ornaments got their start in the 1800’s. Glass blowers began to make figurines which were used for Christmas decorations. In the 1880’s and 1890’s F. W. Woolworth began importing these ornaments. His store Woolworth’s was the market for these Christmas ornaments from Germany.
Angel ornaments come in a variety of designs. Snowmen angels and teddy bear angels are popular with small children. They are delighted by the sparkling angels watching over their tree. The typical tree angel ornament is approximately 6 inches tall wearing an ivory gown and normally playing a harp. Porcelain angels are one of the most popular type although crystal angels are quite beautiful and catch the sparkling of lights.
