Angel FigurinesHebrew concepts are cited as the basis for Christian interpretation of the image and role of angels. The image of a winged angel pouring liquid into a cup for the King, was found at Ore, the Sumatrian capital. However the earliest known remains of a Christian church dating from 233A.D. and uncovered in Syria, has no artistic representation of angels, at all. Yet a synagogue in the same location shows Moses attended by figures in flowing robes. For the most part, it would be well into the third century before Christian art flourished to the point where there are ample remainders today, of the image of angels. The concept of a winged messenger from Heaven or the gods, is not solely a religious one. Greek philosopher Socrates described Eros in the 4th century B.C. as the winged messenger who carried missives back and forth between men and the gods. Hermes, the son of the god Zeus and a nymph, was a herald or messenger, and given winged sandals and a winged cap to speed him on his duties. He was also assigned to bring newly dead souls to the underworld, and dreams to mortal man. This may be the origin for “the angel of death” on many tombstones, where the image is represented by either a winged skull, (eyeless in the early versions), or another unidentifiable head shape flanked by wings. Angels became such a part of Man’s beliefs, that even George Washington credited his guardian angel with such wonders as his success at Valley Forge. Abraham Lincoln was also known to ask the angels for their power and wisdom in solving the conflicts around him. Today, angels are most often perceived as guardians, and as such are found on pins that represent the guardian angel of a person, group, or cause, as well as one many items for children. One of the more distinctive angel figurines available, is the full body male figure, cast in bronze, and resembling some of the 1800s monuments to lost loved ones. For collectors of character ornaments, there is a wide range of frosted, fibre optic, and porcelain angels, as well as angels to decorate your garden, play music for a child, and shine a gentle light at night. | ||||||||
